Airport Cafe Set to Undergo Revamp

5 June 2013

Port Hedland International Airport's bar and cafe will get a makeover this month, with a refreshed layout and colour scheme, new servery and counters, new retail products, a business centre and improved menu offering being introduced.

The refurbishment works will commence on 13 June, and are expected to continue for ten days.

Mayor Kelly Howlett welcomed the cafe upgrade and was pleased that the facility will remain open during the refurbishment works to minimise disruption to passengers.

"I'm excited about the upcoming renovations to the Port Hedland International Airport bar and cafe," she said.

"We know it requires a makeover and it can get quite congested during peak periods, which is why it's great that the lessee is investing to improve customer flow and give it a spruce up.

"The refurbishments will including altering the layout to improve customer movement, adding new point-of-sale stations and introducing bench seating and a new servery to the outside area.

"The cafe operator will also be introducing more retail and consumer goods, such as gifts and electronic merchandise.

"All of our passengers will be pleased that free wi-fi access, a mobile phone charging station and a computer and email centre will feature in the revamped cafe."

Cafe operator Andrew Ziems said that the cafe would have an upbeat, modern feel.

"We will be offering all the services you would expect to find in a modern airport - PCs for last-minute work or just to surf the web, mobile phone chargers, a large selection of magazines and a fantastic selection of food and beverage options," Mr Ziems said.

"This is really going to be an exciting time for the airport and we are very fortunate to be involved."

The cafe operators have extensive cafe, food and beverage and retail experience, operating Port Hedland's Esplanade Hotel and new Empire Bar, as well as Sumo Salads outlets across Western Australia.

The Port Hedland International Airport is set to embark on a $70.5 million redevelopment program, which will be driven by new program director Brett Reiss.
