Airside Lighting Repairs Complete

14 May 2013

Major works to repair airside lighting at Port Hedland International Airport are complete following a cable failure in February which caused loss of airside lighting.

Mayor Kelly Howlett said that crews had worked around the clock to get the lighting back up and running.

“It was a massive undertaking for the team, but I am pleased that the runway lighting is now fully operational,” she said.

“The program of works involved more than 30,000 metres of trenching and electrical cabling in PVC conduits, 6,000 metres of trenching, conduits and cabling for illuminated wind socks, new runway edge lights and new situation transformers in individual pits.

“We worked closely with airlines during the maintenance program to minimise disruption as much as possible – the Town would like to thank the airlines and passengers for their understanding during this process.

“The no-fly restriction has been lifted and evening flights will resume as per normal.”

Mayor Howlett said that additional works would continue to upgrade airside lighting and cabling.
